The most remarkable thing about the Iraq war is the number of warnings and the amount of good advice from traditionally sources that was ignored. Some of this was normal incompetence, but the neocons are wearing ideological blinders. They "knew" the answers and actively rejected most good advice.

"The new administration seems to be paying no attention to the problem of terrorism," Mr. Bremer said in remarks to the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation.
"What they will do is stagger along until there's a major incident and then suddenly say, `Oh, my God, shouldn't we be organized to deal with this?' "
"That's too bad. They've been given a window of opportunity with very little terrorism now, and they're not taking advantage of it. Maybe the folks in the press ought to be pushing a little bit."

Powell on WMD Draft: I'm not reading this. This is bulls---.'
In Feb. 2003, Powell rejected a draft speech, largely written by Cheney's staff. He assembled his own CIA team to review evidence on Iraq's ties to terrorism and WMD--they didn't buy it.
