Bill Ayers (from NYT Oct 3)

Ayers, the "terrorist" is an education prof at the U. of Illinois at Chicago. Together with 2 others, he won Chicago $5 for education from the Annenberg foundation. Obama met him in 1995 when he chaired an education project. He says Ayers is "somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8." The charges were dropped 34 years ago. Ayers once donated $200 to an Obama Campaign. Mayor Daley says he relies on Ayers for advice on education, as he's written 15 books on the subject.

Bill Ayers is now an education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

they have not spoken by phone or exchanged e-mail messages since Mr. Obama began serving in the United States Senate in January 2005 and last met more than a year ago when they bumped into each other on the street in Hyde Park.
in Chicago, Mr. Ayers has largely been rehabilitated.
Federal riot and bombing conspiracy charges against him were dropped in 1974

arning a doctorate in education at Columbia in 1987, Mr. Ayers has been a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the author or editor of 15 books, and an advocate of school reform.

“He’s done a lot of good in this city and nationally,” Mayor Richard M. Daley said in an interview this week, explaining that he has long consulted Mr. Ayers on school issues.

The Ayers-Obama connection first came to public attention last spring, when both Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton, Mr. Obama’s Democratic primary rival, and Mr. McCain brought it up. It became the subject of a television advertisement in August by the anti-Obama American Issues Project and drew new attention recently on The Wall Street Journal’s op-ed page

Mr. Ayers joined two other local education activists to lead a broad, citywide effort that won nearly $50 million for Chicago.

In addition, from 2000 to 2002, the two men also overlapped on the seven-member board of the Woods Fund, a Chicago charity
