   Early Education: An International Comparison

World Comparison of Early Education & Child Care Enrollment
Access to early education and child care is becoming increasingly important for all countries because of its impact on the economy and due to demographic changes occurring in all countries.  The graph below shows that US enrollment in early education lags behind other OECD countries.  The reason for low enrollment is that parents in the US must pay a higher percentage costs than in any other OECD country (popNote).
What is the difference between child care and early education?

The graphs show enrollment for ages 3-6 in educational programs.  The blue bars show pre-primary education; the maroon bars show primary school education. Home-based care, play groups, and day care not focused on child development are not included.
