U.S. Incomes Fell, Poverty Rose in 2002
WashingtonPost.com According to the Census Bureau, the number of Americans who live in povery rose for the second year in a row to 34.6 million, an increase of nearly 3 million people since 2000. The poverty rate rose from 11.7% in 2001 to 12.1% in 2002.

Widest Income Gaps Since 1929
Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Data from the Congressional Budget Office "show that the real average after-tax income of the top one percent of the population rose a remarkable $576,000, or 201 percent, in the 1980s and 1990s, while the average income of those in the middle of the income scale rose $5,500 and income gaps between the top one percent and the rest of the nation widened dramatically."
