Poverty and Income Distribution |
|
Poverty is on the Rise.
The poverty rate increased between 2001 and 2002, rising from 11.7% to 12.1%, according to a recent analysis of Census data by the Center on Budget Policy and Priorities (CBPP).
The Poor Are Growing Poorer.
The average poor person’s income was farther below the poverty line in 2002 than in any other year since 1979, when the data first became available, according to the CBPP.
The Poverty Line is Too Low.
In most areas of the United States, it takes roughly double the federal poverty level to provide a family with basic necessities such as food and housing, according to the National Center for Children in Poverty.
The Income Gap is Widening.
The real average after-tax income of the top one percent of the population rose 201% in the 1980s and 1990s, while that of the middle fifth of the population rose a mere 15%, according to CBO data released in September of 2003. [What effect will the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts have?]
