Many homeless families are turned away from shelters.
There are more than 750,000 homeless people on any given night and only 250,000 spaces available in shelters. The December 2001 U.S. Conference of Mayors' survey indicates that 52% of shelter requests by homeless families were turned down in 2001, according to the The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty.
Adequate long-term solutions must address the varied causes of homelessness, including the crisis of housing affordability, cutbacks to public assistance programs, and the prevalence of working families below the poverty line.
