Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF): TANF is a block grant program that was created by the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. It replaced the 61-year old Aid for Families with Dependent Children cash assistance program.
Child Care, SCHIP, Food Stamps: Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) are the two major federal funding sources for affordable health insurance for low-income families. The Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) assists low-income families with the cost of child care.
Welfare Reform: TANF reauthorization has been stuck in Congress since 2002. Recent reform efforts have focused on working towards poverty reduction rather than caseload reduction.
