Goals of an Exxon boycott

Get Exxon to stop stonewalling on global warming. Exxon is well "behind the curve" on publicly acknowledging the scientific consensus with regard to human-caused climate change and the need for action.  Just compare Exxon's current position with Shell's or BP's.
Get Exxon to stop funding pseudo-scientific advocacy groups that deny human-caused global climate change. Exxon has been deemed the "highest-profile corporate skeptic about global warming". It is the only big oil company directly funding these groups.
Get Exxon to support limits or constraints on carbon emissions. There are a number of policy options available, including "market-based" policies such as cap-and-trade or carbon taxes. Exxon should cease its "head-in-the-sand" approach, and become part of the solution.

"While BP, Shell and ConocoPhillips have joined the United States Climate Action Partnership, which is lobbying for mandatory carbon limits... ExxonMobil remains coy about which, if any, carbon constraints it would support..." —New York Times Magazine, August 12, 2007

Get Exxon to support renewable energy and renewable energy research.

"While BP, Shell and ConocoPhillips are investing in renewable energy sources like wind, solar and biofuels, ExxonMobil... has stated unequivocally that the company will not be putting money into renewables." —New York Times Magazine, August 12, 2007

Whether or not Exxon chooses to invest in renewables, Exxon should support research and incentives for renewable and other carbon-free alternatives to fossil fuel.

As the largest oil company* Exxon's backwards-looking positions are the most problematic. Exxon is also first among oil companies in its government lobbying expenditures. There is no reason your gas-purchasing dollars need to go towards supporting this activity.

* Actually, the largest, most-profitable company, period.
