  Palin Misunderstands Iraq Conflict
Sarah Palin connected the Iraq deployment of an Alaskan National Guard unit to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, speaking of other Fort Wainwright (Alaska) soldiers "lost in the broad conflict that began seven years ago today."

"You'll be there to defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the deaths of thousands of Americans," Palin said to the departing soldiers.

The bipartisan National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States said it found "no credible evidence that Iraq and al Qaida cooperated on attacks against the United States." The group's conclusion confirmed similar findings by the CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies.

  First Amendment?
Sarah Palin, in 1995, as a city council member, had told colleagues that she had noticed the book “Daddy’s Roommate” on the shelves and that it did not belong there, according to Ms. Chase, another council member. Ms. Chase read the book, which helps children understand homosexuality, and said it was inoffensive; she suggested that Ms. Palin read it.“Sarah said she didn’t need to read that stuff,”

Ms. Chase said. “It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn’t even read it... I’m still proud of Sarah,” she added, “but she scares the bejeebers out of me

As mayor, Sarah Palin again eyed the library. In 1996, Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so. According to news coverage at the time, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, said she would definitely not be all right with it.

A few months later a letter from Palin told her she was going to be fired. The letter said the new mayor felt Emmons didn't fully support her and had to go. Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked. After a wave of public support Emmons kept her job.

Saving Money: Mayor Palin's town charged rape victims for medical exam
Former Alaskan Governor Tom Knowles confirmed a charge that Wasilla, while Sarah Palin was mayor, charged rape victims for forensic tests. Eight years ago, complaints about charging rape victims for medical exams in Wasilla prompted the Alaska Legislature to pass a bill -- signed into law by Knowles -- that banned the practice statewide.

"There was one town in Alaska that was charging victims for this, and that was Wasilla," Knowles said. Elsewhere, the testing ($300 to $1200) is routinely paid by the State Troopers and most municipal police agencies.

Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon (appointed by Palin) objected to the law. He said it would cost Wasilla $5,000 to $14,000 a year if the city had to foot the bill for rape exams. "I just don't want to see any more burden put on the taxpayer."
