"Freedom Fuel":  Bush Proposes Hydrogen Cars

In his 2003 Sate of the Union Message, Bush proposed Freedom Fuel.

"Tonight I am proposing $1.2 billion in research funding so that America can lead the world in developing clean, hydrogen-powered automobiles."

"A simple chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen [burning the hydrogen] generates energy, which can be used to power a car producing only water, not exhaust fumes. ... first car driven by a child born today could be powered by hydrogen, and pollution-free. ... make our air significantly cleaner, and our country much less dependent on foreign sources of energy."  — Bush, Jan. 28, 2003

In the last three years, there has been litte progress making hydrogen. It is still made almost entirely from fossil fuel. The only viable alternative is nuclear power, but we will need all of that for electricity till at least 2050. Any nuclear electricity diverted to produce hydrogen would just mean substituting coal for nuclear.

"Freedom Fuel," hydrogen, is not a fuel like oil, natural gas or uranium. It must be made with energy and we will always get less energy out of the hydrogen when we burn it than we put into it when we make it.

To see what's really happening with our "oil addiction" as Bush now calls it, click here. Joseph J. Romm, who was head of DOE's hydrogen program has written the best book on the use of hydrogen (described at the right). He concludes that hydrogen cars would actually be detrimental any time before 2050. Freedom fuel is all hype.
