Stabilization of atmospheric carbon dioxide

stabilization wedges

Out of 15 possilbe "wedges," 7 are needed
Stabilizing the rate of putting C02 into the atmosphere requires 7 "stabilization wedges." Even if we do this, the total CO2 in the atmosphere will keep growsing for a long time because the current rate of CO2 emission is very high. But emission stabilization would keep the amount of CO2 in the air from doubling, and this is thought to offer decent protection from global warming.

A "wedge" is change in some technology, like car fuel efficiency, which increase over the next 50 years to the point where it is saving 1 billion tons of carbon per year, compared to business as usual.

Of the 15 wedges proposed by Princeton university, 13 of them relate energy use. These are:
1. Efficient vehicles
2. Reduced use of vehicles
3. Efficient buildings
4. Efficient coal power plants
5. Gas instead of coal power plants
6. Capture CO2 at baseload power plant
7. Nuclear power for coal power
8. Wind power for coal power
9. PV power for coal power
10. Capture CO2 at H2 plant
11. Capture CO2 at coal-to-synfuels plant
12. Wind H2 in fuel-cell car for gasoline in hybrid car
