The Numbers. The Dept. of Energy tracks "Value of Fossil Fuel Net Imports" in its Annual Energy Review, giving both nominal and real (2000) dollars through 2004. It tracks "Energy Balance" (Imports minus Exports) in its Monthly Energy Review, these are converted to real (2000) dollars. The two series agree to within about 1% in recent years. zFacts converts both sets of number to today's dollars using the same GNP deflator used by DOE. All the data and the graph are available in this spreadsheet .
