Peace President
Jul. 20, 2004
George W. Bush
The enemy declared war on us. Nobody wants to be the war president. I want to be the peace president... The next four years will be peaceful years. (more)

Peace President?
Jul. 19, 2004
George W. Bush
As to direct connections with September the 11th, you know we're digging into the facts to determine if there was one. We will continue to look and see if the Iranians were involved.
I have long expressed my concerns about Iran. After all, it's a totalitarian society where free people are not allowed to, you know, exercise their rights as human beings. This has been an issue that I have been concerned about ever since I've been the president.

???? President?
Feb. 2004

I'm a war president. I make decisions here in the Oval Office in foreign policy matters with war on my mind. (more)

Redefining 'peace'
Jul. 13, 2004
George W. Bush
We are defending the peace by taking the fight to the enemy.  We have followed this strategy -- defending the peace, protecting the peace and extending the peace -- for nearly three years. We have been focused and patient, firm and consistent. (more)

Bush Claims He is in Direct Communication with God
George W. Bush
"God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them." (more)

Bush on Humility
Oct. 12, 2000
George W. Bush
"If we're an arrogant nation, they'll resent us; if we're a humble nation, but strong, they'll welcome us.  And our nation stands alone right now in the world in terms of power, and that's why we've got to be humble, and yet project strength in a way that promotes freedom."

May 03, 04
George W. Bush
It is the President's job to confront problems, not to pass them on to future Presidents and future generations. The President needs to step up to make the hard decisions and to keep his commitment. And that is how I will continue to lead our nation for four more years.     At a Michigan rally. (more)
From the memoirs of George H.W. Bush, 1998
"Trying to eliminate Saddam...would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. Apprehending him was probably impossible.... We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq.... there was no viable "exit strategy" we could see, violating another of our principles. Furthermore, we had been consciously trying to set a pattern for handling aggression in the post-Cold War world. Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the United Nations' mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression that we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land."

Barbara Bush on Body Bags
Mar. 18, 2003
Barbara Bush
"Why should we hear about body bags, and deaths, and how many, what day it's gonna happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Or, I mean, it's, it's not relevant. So, why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?" (more)

Bush on Meet the Press. Feb.  2004
Transcript from Bush's television interview.

Government Executive Magazine
Bush proposed increasing defense spending by just $4.5 billion annually, or less than half the amount proposed by Al Gore. Yet he has promised to come to the rescue of a defense establishment that needs an extra $50 billion annually, according to a recent study by the Congressional Budget Office -- or an extra $90 billion annually, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Moreover, Bush has yet to explain where he will find the additional funds for his national missile defense program, estimated to cost anywhere from $60 billion to $100 billion over the next decade.
