   Rep. Coble on Japanese Interment

Chair Committee says Japanese Internment was OK.
Responded to a caller on a radio show who suggested that all Arab Americans be rounded up and incarcerated to prevent terrorist attacks. Coble said that might not be necessary today, but that it was "appropriate at the time" during World War II when we locked up Japanese families:

"We were at war. They were an endangered species. For many
Japanese Americans, it wasn’t safe for them to be on the
street. Some probably were intent on doing harm to us, just
as some of the Arab Americans are probably intent on doing
harm to us" (Feb. 4, 2003).
