Is
Clean Coal Clean?
Actually,
it’s not. The process of making clean coal reduces atmospheric
emission of carbon as well as contaminants such as sulfur and
mercury. But mining the coal is as messy as ever, and it takes more
clean coal to yield the same amount of energy. The “clean”
electricity-generating plants also appear to cause more groundwater
and solid-waste problems than dirty coal plants do.
