“One of the very few heroes in an unheroic place,” that’s Bernie’s hero. King Abdullah was the only person to receive such praise from Bernie in yesterday’s debate. In contrast, he likes Obama a bit but has called him “weak” and “disappointing.” And Hillary? She’s an anti-hero controlled by Wall St.
So who’s this Abdullah guy, who’s better than our president? One of his socialist heros? Actually he’s the King of Jordan who maintains a secret police force and limits on freedom of expression and democracy. He was a target rather than an ally of the Arab Spring. Maybe this is royal socialism, but it’s sure not democratic socialism.
And why does Bernie ignore the heroes of the Tunisian revolution of 2011, the one successful democratic revolution in the Arab world, in favor of the counter-revolutionary King?
This is all a bit hard to understand, but it may help to remember that Bernie doesn’t like Democrats much more than he likes Republicans. As he said in his book, he sees no “big difference between the the two major parties.” That’s why he won’t stoop to join the Democratic Party. (debate transcript)
